| 2012/05/11 | Yeah, those emails you may have received with the subject line "Your TD EasyWeb cIient account has been Iimited" are bogus. If you check the link, it won't take you to the TD site, but rather something that looks like the TD site in an attempt to have you enter your TD userid and password... at which point the bad guys would have access to your bank account. | |||||||

| 2012/05/03 | 2012/05/11 | If when logging into a Nexus station you see a message indicating your profile can't be loaded and you will have a "temporary profile" loaded instead, please logout and stop by to see Carlos or myself for a quick fix. The problem is due to how Symantec blocks some malicious java code from a website you may have visited (though often I think it's a false positive). Also, here's a warning to encourage you to get things fixed sooner rather than later if you see this... "Temporary profiles" are not saved so among other problems you'll run into is that files/folders saved to the desktop will be permanently lost. Just thought I'd give fair warning. | ||||||

| 2012/04/16 | 2012/04/18 | Our Dept backups and the Nexus backups are only kept for a few months at most. I really recommend to people to make permanent backups of files on all machines (offices, labs, home, laptops) at least once a term - and now is as good a time as any. If you are purchasing CDs or DVDs from a UW account, see Helen and she'll be able to order things for you. "CD -R" or "DVD -R" discs are probably best for archiving files (longer shelf life), but +RW's will probably also do the trick. Consider making two copies of critical stuff (it's not a backup unless there's two). Be sure to store them in a dark, cool, clean area and not on your window sill. Things won't last forever so also consider recopying old discs. In the same way, if you are copying things to an external disk disk, be sure you have a second copy of everything as all drives will also fail eventually, and probably at the worst time possible. | ||||||

| 2011/12/26 | 2012/01/11 | Nexus stations in Psych have all been upgraded to Office 2010. A couple minor issues you may run into with a trivial fix... if you've created shortcuts to Word, Excel or PowerPoint on your desktop yourself, you'll need to delete those (since the old version is no longer there) and create new shortcuts (right-click and drag from the Start Menu). Things should always start properly from the Start Menu. Also, the first time you start Outlook, the user name name field on the login panel may come up as "MAIL\youruserid". You'll need to change this back to the usual "ads\youruserid". Grad students should avoid Outlook on Nexus stations for now as there's some potential issues with multiple userids logging into the same machine and also quota issues - for the moment, students should stick to the web intereface or thunderbird on Nexus stations. | ||||||
| 2011/12/22 | 2011/12/29 | Please leave your Nexus stations on over the holidays as a number of updates will be going out over that time (Office 2010, SPSS, AMOS and a few others). They will go into a power saving mode when not in use. No harm turning off the LCDs, printers and scanners. | ||||||
| 2011/12/21 | 2011/12/26 | We'll be updating a sprinkling of Nexus machines to Office 2010 again in the next few days to ensure there's no major issues for when we move the remaining 280+ Psych Nexus stations to Office 2010 one night next week. If you would like to avoid having your PC as one of the random test installs, let me know asap (send the machine name). If your machine is updated and you notice an issue, let us know asap. One minor issue you may run into with a trivial fix... if you've created shortcuts to Word, Excel or PowerPoint on your desktop yourself, you'll need to delete those (since the old version is no longer there) and create new shortcuts. Things should always start properly from the Start Menu though. Also, the first time you start Outlook, the user name name field on the login panel may come up as "MAIL\youruserid". You'll need to change this back to the usual "ads\youruserid". | ||||||

| 2011/12/15 | 2011/12/20 | There's a significant number of Windows security updates which have been released recently. These will get applied to Nexus stations automatically so no worries there, but be sure to update any non-Nexus stations (home machines, laptops, etc) ASAP. | ||||||
| 2011/12/14 | 2011/12/29 | The 2011 licenses for SPSS/AMOS 19 expire on December 31 with a grace period until January 31 at which time SPSS will stop working. Soon you'll start seeing warning messages about this when you start SPSS or AMOS. I've sent a note to faculty indicating which machines they had purchased licenses for in 2011 ask asking which machines we should purchase licenses for in 2012. If a faculty member had purchased SPSS/AMOS for you this past year, touch base with them ASAP for a renewal if you need it. I've asked that people purchasing licenses get back to me with this information by Tuesday December 20th. The paperwork and installs are much much easier if we can do everyone at once. THANKS. Nexus stations are easy and will get updated automatically. Other machines will need to be done manually. I'll update things here once we have the software and license codes ready to go. | ||||||

| 2011/10/22 | 2011/10/26 | There's several avenues of attack that the super-annoying guys are using. We'll need to move printers to a separate secure subnet to completely avoid future toner bombs - IST is pushing a change to all network switches on campus to allow this to be implemented. Until this happens (hopefully later in the week), it might be a good idea to power off printers for the evenings and weekends and/or simply keep a small number of sheets of paper in the printer.
UPDATE: We noticed some odd network issues with the new subnet and decided to hold off on the changes we were planning on Thursday. Printers are still in the original subnet and still vulnerable to the toner bomb attacks. Please leave the printers turned on, and simply open the paper tray to prevent the printer from printing. We'd like you to do this rather than turning them off so that we can check the status of the printers over the network.

| 2011/09/10 | 2011/09/13 | Sending email for UW-related work from your Gmail account or other non-UW account is a bad idea for a number of reasons. For one, people can't confirm who you are - e.g., anyone in the world can set up the email address mark.zanna@gmail.com and we don't really know it's Mark unless we ask him. If you are dealing with confidential information, you probably don't want to expect people to reply to what is effectively an anonymous account. Individuals also need to keep track of this non-UW address for future emails and prey that someone doesn't forge something similar (such as mark.p.zanna@gmail.com) which we might assume is correct if we vaguely remember Mark had sent something earlier from gmail - again we have no way of verifying unless we ask him if he really sent it. You really should use your @uwaterloo.ca for all UW-related emails. It also makes things easier for people when searching for past emails from you if you always use your same @uwaterloo.ca address so that multiple searches don't need to be done. It's especially important if your gmail address is something like myfishhiccups@gmail.com which doesn't reflect a portion of your name. If you use Gmail, you should set it up so that any UW-related emails that you send will have your @uwaterloo.ca email address as the return address. To do this:
Anyway, if you can stick to your UW address for emails to myself, Carlos, Sharon, Rita, Heather, Theresa, Sherry, Marg, Mark, Colin, Helen, our coops, the ACO and IST, HR, students you are TAing, other UW faculty/Staff/students/depts/offices, research collaborators, research clients and subjects, we'd all greatly appreciate it.

We noticed a few machines not booting - probably the power supply croaked. Let us know if you have trouble with any other machines and we'll look at them ASAP.
| 2011/08/21 | 2011/09/18 | Please contact Carlos or myself if a computer or printer needs to be moved. We need to update things in the wiring closet before things will work in a new location and we also need to update our DB of equipment locations. Thanks. | ||||||
| 2011/08/21 | 2011/09/13 | Due to the recent watarts upgrade, people running web studies created prior to July 31, 2011 on watarts using the Web Form Templates for Surveys/Questionaires by bee will need to check the top of that page for info on how to fix things if those studies are still active. New studies on watarts and all studies running on artsweb are not affected. | ||||||
| 2011/08/21 | 2011/08/22 | Electrical power, cooling, heating, ventilation was off in PAS on Saturday August 20 6:00am-midnight. | 2011/08/19 | 2011/08/21 | Most of the campus will be down at this time. The MC building is not affected so you should be able to send/receive email from off campus using connect (faculty/staff) or mailservices (students) - I'm guessing myWaterloo will not be available. The main UW web page www.uwaterloo.ca will also be available but most other campus web sites will be down including all of Arts, Psych, beeHive and any web studies you may have set up. I'll come in on Sunday morning, probably not early BTW, if you need a link from the beeHive while things are down, do this... Go to Google and search for "uw beehive" (no quotes) and rather than clicking on the link, click the "Cached" link which will show you a recent copy of the beeHive. | ||||||

I'd simply suggest you just not even go close to any computers here during that time. Make sure you don't login before 8:30am that day.

| 2011/08/03 | 2011/08/10 | Watarts was down for upgrades on Sunday July 31 8:30-noon. WatIAM/Nexus passwords will no be required to login. | 2011/07/19 | 2011/07/20 | There seems to be a lot of phishing emails floating around at the moment. | 2011/07/15 | 2011/07/19 | We've noticed an issue with the autoupdate on a small percentage of systems running Symantec EndPoint (AntiVirus). After downloading several Mbs, the process stops and then restarts a minute later with another download occurring and again failing. This process repeats. This can be a potentially big problem with home machines as you might hit your download cap and Rogers, Bell or other ISPs may charge you extra for your internet service that month. If you had installed SEP from from the IST SEP download site, check to ensure you currently have version 11.0.6300.803. If you don't you might want to consider uninstalling your current version and installing the latest version. Alternatively, just touch base with me and there's an easier fix we might be able to do (remove the pkg file from the Downloads directory). Let me know if you were running into this. Thanks. | ||||||

| 2011/07/06 | 2011/07/19 | I'm in the process of moving the last bunch of research email accounts from watarts to mailservices. I had IST reset the WatIAM/Nexus passwords on a number of accounts that people didn't know the WatIAM password (or folks I didn't hear back from :-)). Anyway, I'll get the email moved on these accounts in the next few days, but if you are having trouble logging in or checking email, just touch base with me. Web pages on watarts related to these accounts are not affected. | ||||||
| 2011/07/06 | 2011/07/15 | The mail service on artsmail has been turned off. A while ago users were move from artsmail to mailservices. If your addressbook previously contained something like userid@artsmail.uwaterloo.ca, you should instead use userid@uwaterloo.ca (drop the artsmail). | ||||||

| 2011/06/14 | 2011/07/01 | IST has provided an update to SEP (AntiVirus) which will generate a pop-up on home machines and laptops asking if you would like SEP upgraded . To avoid any issues, accept the upgrade and just let your machine sit for about 20 minutes while the upgrade completes. It's a silent upgrade which will complete in the background so avoid rebooting or shutting down the machine until it finishes. Don't browse the web or read emails while the upgrade is taking place since you won't be protected for a period of time. Again, don't use the machine for about 20 minutes while the upgrade completes. | ||||||

| 2011/03/19 | 2011/03/26 | The APC software pops up a warning after 3 years to replace the battery in your UPS. But, since machines here are usually on 24/7, battery life tends to be longer so it's not unusual to keep a battery for 4-5 years. Down in the bottom-right of your display near the clock there's a little icon that looks like a computer under a parachute. Double-click on that and as long as the "Estimated Battery Time" is greater than 10 minutes, you should be good. The UPS software is configured to shutdown your system after 5 minutes of no power, so having 10 minutes of battery life provides 5 minutes for the machine to properly save things and shutdown in the event of a power outage. If you want to keep an eye on that, no harm waiting a bit longer before replacing the battery to stretch the life/$$$ of the battery. The batteries are relatively inexpensive though ($39) so no harm replacing the battery immediately if you are getting the warning and don't want to think about it. Just give the word and we can put an order in. | ||||||

The ACO is hoping to have things fixed "later in November." AVOID STORING FILES OR FOLDERS ON YOUR DESKTOP as files won't get transferred to the network drive and backed up until you successfully logout. Since it may take several minutes to transfer large files/folders from your dekstop when you logout, you'll probably have your coat on and will be down the hall before you can see the popup that will appear telling you that it could not save your files/profile which includes your desktop contents (if you see the pop-up, you can login the same day and your files/folders will still be there and you can move them elsewhere). This will keep the data a bit cleaner and will hopefully prevent login issues (e.g., if someone enters a space at the start/end of a userid/password entry). It has also been installed on all Nexus stations where faculty members purchased licenses. If a license for SPSS or AMOS has been purchased on a non-Nexus station, login to a Nexus station and click 'Psych Shortcuts' (on the desktop), 'Explore Psych', 'Misc' and 'SPSS 19'. There you will find the files you need along with a file called 'README.txt' which will tell you how to get things installed on non-Nexus machines, laptops and/or home machines. If you are currently reading this on a Nexus station with Internet Explorer just click here to get to that folder (a new window will open). This should also work for people using IE on the campus wireless network - enter "nexus\youruserid" as your userid and your Nexus password when prompted.

| 2011/02/01 | 2011/02/02 | SPSS/AMOS 19 will get installed on all Nexus stations in the Psych Divisional Teaching Labs in the wee hours of Tuesday morning when they automatically reboot. If you want it installed sooner rather than later, logout, press ctrl-alt-del and select Shutdown/Restart to have the machine reboot right away. SPSS/AMOS 19 has also been installed on all Nexus where faculty members purchased licenses. | 2011/01/29 | 2011/03/29 | If you change your WatIAM password, it will change both your WatIAM and Nexus password at the same time. Unfortunately things are broken in Arts so if you do attempt to change your password anytime after October 27th, please see Carlos or myself to complete the process. The ACO is/was hoping to have things fixed "later in November" (2010?). | ||||||
| 2011/01/28 | 2011/01/29 | You may have received an email from someone in IST with the subject "Stale Passwords". This is a valid email so you can follow the instructions. BUT, the WatIAM password change will change both your WatIAM and Nexus password at the same time. Unfortunately things are broken in Arts so if you do attempt to change your password anytime after October 27th, please see Carlos or myself to complete the process. The ACO is hoping to have things fixed "later in November" - I had assumed they mean 2010, but apparently not. :-) | ||||||
| 2011/01/28 | 2011/01/29 | A circuit blew again in the ACO machine room on the 1st floor at about 2:20am Thursday morning. If you notice a message indicating your profile could not be loaded, logout from the temporary profile you will be logged in with. Then reboot the machine - at the login screen press ctrl-alt-del and select Shutdown/Restart. This should get things back to normal, but if you notice any issues, let us know. | ||||||

| 2011/01/21 | 2011/02/01 | SPSS/AMOS 19 will land on Nexus stations automagically (if purchased) before the end of the month. SPSS 19 has already been installed on most Nexus stations where AMOS 19 wasn't also requested - I'll update machines that are to get both packages (our divisional teaching labs as well) in the next week or so. We're just waiting for ENG to complete the package to automate the AMOS install on Nexus stations. | 2011/01/20 | 2011/01/21 | SPSS and AMOS purchased by faculty members expired December 31, and we're in the grace period which allows it to work until January 31. I've sent a note to all faculty members indicating where SPSS/Amos was installed in 2010 and asking on what machines licenses should be renewed/purchased. If you need your advisor to purchase it for you again this year, please contact him/her asap in order to allow them to get their list to me by January 12. We don't actually have the CDs so we can't start the install process yet. I'll post another note here when we're ready to carry on. The early pricing we received for SPSS/AMOS was incorrect. For 2011 SPSS costs $110/machines, AMOS $75/machine for AMOS (PC only) and there's also a separate module called Sample Power (PC only) available for $60/machine. Update: Tuesday Update: SPSS 19 is now installed in IST controlled classrooms across campus, the ACO labs downstairs, our Psych Division Teaching Lab machines (ptlab* machines in 3022, 4036, 3245, 3253B, 3274, 1422, 4268, 4287). AMOS 19 has not yet been installed in any of these areas. SPSS 19 is also going out to Nexus machines where faculty members have requested licenses be purchased. The automated AMOS install for Nexus stations isn't quite ready so machines that currently have SPSS 18 and AMOS 18 won't be upgaded immediately so that people can still use AMOS 18. We now have SPSS/AMOS install CDs. I'll probably ask that the first person to stop by from each lab group install it on the other laptops/non-Nexus machines for that group - we're a bit backlogged at the moment, so the more we can pass off to people, the better. :-) If you need it installed on a home machine, just stop by at the end of the day to borrow the CDs and return them first thing the next morning. | ||||||

| 2011/01/08 | 2011/02/17 | The remote control for the projector in the ABC (PAS 3026) has croaked. I'm trying to find a replacement. For now, use the Leafs flag that's left there to turn the projector on/off. As usual, be sure to utter "Go Leafs Go" when you raise the flag. | ||||||
| 2011/01/08 | 2011/01/09 | Late this afternoon (Friday) I'll run something to power down any Nexus stations where no one is logged in. Later this even I'll run something to power down the machine even if you are logged in. A pop-up will appear saying it will power down the workstation in 2 hours. Just let me know if you are really working on it and I'll delay the shutdown on the individual machine. | ||||||
| 2011/01/08 | 2011/01/09 | Please power down all computers and printers and also turn off UPSs [1] [2] before you leave on Friday. We'll be able to automatically power down any Nexus which are left on which will eliminate the chance of disk errors when the shutdown happens, but we won't be able to power off the UPSs (they will beep until the battery runs dry). Please don't power up any computers until after 4pm Saturday when the network is back. I'll saunter in on Saturday after 4pm and fire up faculty/staff Nexus stations in the office areas so that those folks can can connect to their Nexus stations with RDP but I'll leave the machines in other areas to individuals to power on. Obviously backups of D:\users won't happen this weekend. Watarts and artsweb will also not be available during this time. Email accounts on connect (faculty/staff) and mailservices (students) is housed in IST so no interruption there. | ||||||
| 2011/01/07 | 2011/01/08 | Folks on the 1st and 3rd floor might be getting pop-ups saying you haven't been backed up since Dec 24th or so. D:\users backups should occur again on Thursday night so if you see the message again Friday, pop a note to Carlos. | ||||||

| 2010/11/27 | 2010/12/03 | Avoid storing files and folders on your desktop on Nexus stations. If you bump up against your quota limit, you will lose files. Rather, store files in your My Documents folder and create shortcuts to the files on your desktop. This way, since the files are stored in your My Documents folder, they will be backed up every hour. Files and folders on your desktop are not backed up unless you successfully logout (no profile pop-up messages indicating files can't be saved). | ||||||

The ACO is hoping to have things fixed "later in November." Avoid storing files or folders on your desktop as files won't get transferred to the network drive and backed up until you logout. Since it may take several minutes to transfer large files/folders from your dekstop when you logout, you'll probably have your coat on and will be down the hall before you can see the popup that will appear telling you that it could not save your files/profile (if you see the pop-up, you can login the same day and your files/folders will still be there and you can move them elsewhere). If have have already changed things on the WatIAM password page this week, logout and stop by to see Carlos or myself ASAP and we can complete the process so that you won't run into problems. I'll pop something here to indicate when things are fixed (the ACO indicated "a few weeks").

| 2010/09/22 | 2010/09/23 | I'll post a note here as soon as I get any other updates from the ACO. Feel free to stop by my office to confirm where things are at before you attempt to login in the morning. I'll pop a note on my door if I have to leave the office. I'll also update my voicemail with the status as well, x36638, in case that's more convenient for you to check. Anything stored on the Arts file server will be unavailable. This includes web studies housed on the artsweb server. If you are teaching in a classroom and need to login to a Nexus station anywhere on campus while the artsfile server is down, we'll need to arrange for a temporary Nexus account from another faculty (since only Arts is affected). Contact me asap if this is the case. Alternatively a laptop could be used (and hopefully your talk is also stored somewhere besides artsfile). BTW, if you have RAs or people working in your lab from other faculties, they can login to any Nexus station and carry on as usual (aside from accessing the various psych-lab-* shares obvisouly). Only people in Arts with files/folders stored on the Arts file server are affected. | ||||||

If you are running subjects and would like to avoid the test message on a specific machine, let us know the name of the machine (on the yellow sticky on top of the machine) and we'll disable it for the day. You'll also get phone messages, but we can't stop those.

| 2010/06/23 | 2010/06/25 | The Lenovo Support Site had some malicious code injected into it on the weekend. Here's more details in case you are interested. If you have a ThinkPad, you may see a "Solve PC issues" icon in the bottom right corner notifying you of updates. It's probably a good idea to hold off going to the site for a week or so until things are tidied up. BTW, the "Solve PC issues" icon is normal and expected (it doesn't mean you are infected). If you see this icion, there are probably valid updates to install, but just hold off on applying the updates for week or so. | ||||||

Besure you keep the default settings for warnings (90%/50 0.000000or the Ndrive/Profile) so that you have elbow room to tidy things up if you approach your quota limit. Don't bump the warnings to 1000therwise you will run into problems. Feel free to Carlos or myself if you see any quota warning messages. Since quotas were off yesterday and are on today, if you logout while being over quota, you may loose files. Faculty/Staff quotas have been increased to 2Gb on your network drive. Grad students still have 500Mb. Also, I can't talk about quotas without a reminder that it's a bad idea to store files/folders on your desktop. | 2010/06/10 | 2010/07/07 | If you've installed Symantec EndPoint (SEP, the antivirus program used on campus) on laptops or home machines, you will soon see a pop-up asking you to update it. Quit any programs you have running and go ahead with the update, it'll take 10-20 minutes so let it finish before you do anything else and once it's done, reboot your system. If you see the yellow shield in the tray with a small green circle, you're good.
| 2010/06/09 | 2010/06/10 | Network printers will be unavailable between 7am-8:30am Wednesday June 9 while the ACO installs several patches on their servers. | ||||||
| 2010/06/06 | 2010/06/09 | At the moment the ACO had quotas turned off on your Nexus accounts. They are doing some account cleanup after the move to the new file server. If you notice your quota usage is 0%, your files haven't disappeared - they are still there. But, as usual, avoid storing files on your desktop so you don't run into any problems when they turn things back on. | ||||||
| 2010/06/06 | 2010/06/09 | There are reports that this vulnerability is being actively exploited so I've removed the authplay.dll file from our Nexus PCs to disable the exploit. You may want to do the same for any non-Nexus PCs (including Macs on Nexus), home machines and laptops. See the link above for details on how to do this. Removing the dll file will cause Acrobat to crash if you try to view a PDF with Flash content (the means for the exploit to occur), but that's better than the alternative. :-) If you have a PDF file with Flash content from a source you know is safe, let me know and I'll pop the file back into place temporarily on your Nexus PC so that you can view it - I suspect not too many legitimate PDFs will have Flash content though. | ||||||

| 2010/06/04 | 2010/06/05 | A number of updates will be going out to Nexus stations tonight (thursday). Please be sure to logout before you leave tonight. Don't shutdown the machine - just make sure it's powered on and at the login screen. In the wee hours, the machine will reboot and the updates will be applied. This will save you from having to wait 10-30 minutes while the updates happen the next time the machine is booted. I may check machines after 10pm this evening to see if anyone is logged in and force a logout after a an hour or two (you'll see a pop-up). If for some reason you'd rather not have me do this, let me know the name of the machine and I'll exclude it from my scripts. Please also pass this message on to your RAs in case there are any issues there (hopefully not, but no harm including them). | ||||||

| 2010/05/08 | 2010/05/15 | The notices this week are getting a bit long. If you've made it this far, here's something that hopefully makes it all worth your while... A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm, soothing voice, says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "Okay, now what?" | ||||||

| 2010/05/08 | 2010/05/09 | 7-Zip on Nexus stations should properly handle files created in WinZIP with a password and AES encryption. If you would like 7-Zip to be the default unzipper to open when you "double-click" on a .zip file (on Nexus stations, laptops, home machines, etc), do this:
You may need to follow the same routine if you save .7z archives (or any of the other available compressed formats). The reason WinZip was replaced on campus was because the cost of the license to purchase it on all Nexus stations on campus was prohibitive. Individuals can still purchase WinZip themselves if desired, but I'd suggest to hold off and go with the flow and use 7-Zip instead. 7-Zip is free to download and install from http://www.7-zip.org/ in case you want to get it on any laptops or home systems. People you are collaborating with can also download and install it. In addition to compressing files, you can also encrypt them with a password. Google for 7zip tutorial and you'll find a few helpful tidbits to get up to speed with it.

| 2010/05/06 | 2010/05/07 | UPDATE: The following should be fixed by a patch which will go out to all Nexus stations on campus on Wednesday night. A few updates to all Nexus stations on campus went out at the start/end of term and it looks like one of the things that happened was that Winzip was replaced with a package called 7-zip, but unfortunately, the way things are at the moment doesn't let you double-click on a zip file to open it. As a workaround, rather than double-clicking on a zip file, in the Start Menu, select "Accessories/7zip File Manager". The first time, it might open in your "My Documents" folder. If you want to get to the D: drive or elsewhere, click the "Up Folder" icon beside the address a few times to get to your computer and you can select the D: drive from there. Unfortunately trying to do a file association to zip files doesn't seem to stick which prevents you from setting things to and being able to double-click on a zip file or right-clicking on a zip file and selecting "Open with 7zip". I left a message with the folks in Eng who are maintaining this package so hopefully it gets fixed soon. | 2010/05/02 | 2010/05/03 | Sorry for the late notice. Unfortunately the ACO just announced this early Saturday morning... I suspect artsweb will not be available during this time either. | ||||||

| 2010/04/30 | 2010/05/05 | Avoid placing computers on the floor. Cleaning staff are instructed to not move things and as a result, there's a lot of dirt and dust in most rooms. If a computer is on the floor, it will basically act as a very costly air cleaner. Computers need to circulate air to cool themselves, the air gets pulled into the computer and the elctro-static charge causes the dirt and dust to stick to the computer components. Unfortunately the coating of dirt and dust prevents the components from cooling causing overheating and failure requiring $$$ to fix. Anyway, keep computers on your desk, or if you have room, consider putting it on the bookshelves behind your desk. | ||||||

| 2010/04/23 | 2010/04/30 | Our Dept backups and the Nexus backups are only kept for a few months at most. | ||||||

| 2010/04/21 | 2010/04/22 | There seems to be an intermittent problem with email not arriving on the connect server (used by faculty and staff) Tuesday evening. I've left a voicemail with IST so hopefully it's solved by Wednesday morning. | ||||||
| 2010/04/19 | 2010/04/21 | There was a power outage over the weekend. If your machine is off, turn the UPS on first, wait until the lights stop flashing, then fire up your monitor and machine. Then check if your neighbour got things going OK. | ||||||
